Date Time Blog Post- Amber Delgado

In Phil Kayne's "Date  Time," readers are given a glimpse into Kayne's childhood and defining moments that made him who he is. The chapter "Beginning" gives a lot of insight into childhood racial trauma, self consciousness and even history pieces about his family. There is a lot of variety between happy and sad moments in this chapter but it seems like the title "beginning" is referring to the beginning of his issues and the beginning of when he discovered happiness. He writes about how he falls in love with a girl, how he has always been too skinny and insecure about that, how his best friend made fun of him to be accepted in a different crowd and many more.

The poem "Apparition," I feel, gives a true glimpse into the struggles Kayne had to go through on a daily basis in an all white neighborhood. The definition of apparition is "the appearance of something remarkable or unexpected." Jonathan was someone that got close to Kayne. Jonathan was one of Kayne's best friends. He was able to make Kayne's father laugh so hard he held his stomach while Kayne said he never was able to make his father laugh like that. He was someone very loved by Kayne. Kayne felt bad for Jonathan because Jonathan had weight issues, but in the end Kayne was always their for him. Jonathan's want to fit in took over one day where he decided to make fun of Kayne and make racist Asian "jokes" to appease a crowd. Kayne feels betrayed as one would and the fact that it came out of nowhere was shocking to him especially because that was his best friend. This was a heartbreaking poem to read. it conveys the message that while it may look like you have a best friend, you can never really tell people's motives and they can eventually do something to hurt you for personal gain. In this sense, he gives an amazing insight into the mindset of a person of color and how we never can really be too sure about who our true friends are because, at the end of the day, everyone just wants to fit in. While this poem was incredibly heartbreaking, it was a beautifully written piece.
