iExamen

Going into this iExamen had me thinking about whether or not my communication skills were up to par. Considering the fact that I’m naturally a shy person at first. At first because it takes a while for me to become comfortable enough to familiarize myself with my surroundings, and make me comfortable enough to communicate my feelings. Outside of school I  communicate with others by word of mouth usually, but in college I find it easier and a lot less nerve-wracking to send a text, email, or just make a phone call. This helps take the pressure off the interaction and helps me focus on my thoughts and ideas more clearly. As I began this iExamen, everything started off slow and steady at first. I realized that I had communicated to my roommates a lot more often and clearly than I’d imagined. For example I usually have my door open when I’m not busy and am free to chat or interact with my roommates, vice versa when it’s closed. I noted that when I communicated with anyone this past weekend I made sure to keep eye contact, smile, and to try my best to not fold my arms. I’ve been told recently that I don’t look too approachable and often look mean so I’m doing my best to change the way I appear to others. I’m hoping this encourages conversation with new people, and perhaps makes it easier for me to approach others. I’m not very active on social media, I mainly log on to either promote my friend’s music or to get into contact with new people. I feel that in-person communication is by far the best form of communication; it allows me to be direct, and concise. There’s little to no confusion when communicating in person because you can read body language, listen to tone of voice, and make eye contact unlike other forms of communication. I noticed that when I reached the time period where I had to turn off my phone and any other technology assisted-devices I had no problem with these circumstances. Usually I’m pretty busy so I barely have time to be on my phone as is, so this felt pretty normal to me. I communicated normally, the only thing that changed was the self observation and realization of what was being asked of me. Overall the iExamen helped me realize that there are areas in communication that I need to work on, but it also helped me realize that there are many areas that I’ve already improved in and should continue to do so, as long as I remain eager to learn and accept all feedback.
