iExamen 1

I observed the iExamen on Sunday this week and started off my day by obviously waking up. I mostly followed the routine of most weekends which after waking up consists of watching youtube, hanging out with friends and bit and playing games. My roommate was in the room just chilling out and as we talked, I realized how much we rely on non verbal communication, such as hand gestures, facial expressions and body language, to convey how we truly feel or to emphasize certain points that we are making or to just providea visual enhancement to what we are saying. When I was talking with a few friends over xbox, it became clear how the meaning can get lost a bit or that you might have to clarify a few things as you may not fully understand what someone is saying just by hearing it, however when talking over the phone or voice chat, I realized that people will rely on verbal techniques such as tone and phrasing of words more to compensate for lack of nonverbal communication. Where things really start to get dicey is when you move into the realm of non verbal text communication. I found that over the course of the day as i was texting friends that in order to convey any emotion or reveal feelings that you have to use action verbs such as “lol” as if you were describing what you would be doing in real life. Other than that however, it is hard to decipher if someone is trying to be sarcastic or serious. Now moving into the hour of no technology, I found that you couldn't just hide behind your phone as I went to go take a walk around campus to get some exercise and to chill out and I found that you really start to just take a look around you and to view the scenery and maybe things you didn't notice like creatures running around in the forest. When talking with people for that hour, when I Wasn't t buried in my phone, I found myself saying hi to people I would just ignore. Overall, the iExamen has taught me about how we over rely on our phones and technology to communicate and the lines of what even is real communication get blurred when all you see is text on screen.
