This weekend I was able to visit home and spend some time with my family. As soon as I saw my mom I gave her a warm hug and kiss. I haven’t seen her in almost a month and so we really missed each other. It made my heart happy so I verbally expressed to her that I love her. Immediately I facetimed my dad who still lives in Las Vegas. It’s sometimes hard to be living in separate states I am still able to communicate with him how much I miss and love him. He responds with a smile and blows me a kiss through the screen. Even though I saw my mom in person and my dad through a facetime call I was still was able to communicate my appreciation for them. If it wasn’t for technology I wouldn’t be able to see my dad’s face from 2,424 miles away.
On Saturday I wanted to spend some quality time with my mom before I went back to school so we went to the mall. I muted my phone and gave it to her so I won’t be tempted to check it. We first got our favorite drinks from Starbucks to give us energy for the day. After a few minutes, I completely forgot about my phone and it felt refreshing to be fully present while conversating with my mom. We went inside our favorite stores and picked up some pieces for the fall season. My mom and I were able to talk to each other for the whole hour since we had so much to catch up on. Having no technological distractions helped us to continue our conversation.
After the hour was over I naturally checked my phone and I saw a few text messages from my best friends from Las Vegas. I responded to them and about 10 minutes passed by until my mom noticed and then I noticed my mom was on the phone with my aunt.
This iExamen really helped me to realize that our phones can wait and how much our conversations with the people in front of us are so much more meaningful without the constant distractions from our phones. It was interesting how my mom and I both started using our phones at the same time. It was like a domino effect and that is unfortunately very common in this day in age. I hope to practice this exercise more often so I can reflect and live a purposeful life.
